Social Group at a Glance! by Yoko Phillips

The 2017 summer social groups were another grand success! Seven weeks just flew by in a flash. It was great to see all the familiar faces, as well as some newcomers, who brought great personalities to the groups. All the learners enjoyed cooperation activities, such as making slime, sock puppets, a robot, and power-point presentations! It was great to see them having fun working together in the groups.

We are also happy to report the successful launch of our new pilot program, Let’s Learn About Puberty!  In this program, a group of boys learned various subjects around puberty, and also got to engage in fun related activities.  Building on the success of this summer, we look forward to providing this program to many more learners!

Fall is now here, and September 11th marked the beginning of the school-year groups. This year, we are excited to welcome Morgan Tompkins to our Small Group Intervention Program team! Morgan has worked with our learners as a tutor since 2015. She has recently completed her Master’s program in Behavior Analysis, and is on her way to becoming a BCBA. She will be a great addition to the continued effort of improving our social groups!

Building on the success of the summer groups, we continue to introduce new and exciting curricula and activities to keep the excitement flowing! Our social skills groups address a wide range of skills: basic play skills, school readiness, perspective-taking, conversation, and executive functioning skills, in order to meet the need of various age groups and individual needs. All learners will be working on individualized goals developed in collaboration with the Small Group Intervention Program team and each learner’s Program Manager. Generalization of the skills learned in an individualized setting, especially social skills, is always the biggest challenge for our learners. NBA social groups are a great place to practice these skills in a group setting, in order to help prepare them for real-life environments, such as school and the community.
